We lost one of our NDR family recently, DJ Martin Mac sadly passed away on 18th July 2024 after a short period of illness.
Those of us who knew him, and the listeners to his many shows will agree he was a very enigmatic man, with an incredibly eclectic taste in music.
I challenge anyone who listened to his shows to name an instance where they did not hear at least one new song, or one new artist.
Martin began his DJ journey back in 1972 when he took residency in The Growling Budgie pub in Ilford, Essex. A time when 33 1/3 and 45 were clicks on a revolving circular dish (even had 78 on it).
Many years of club work, mobile disco ,pop quizzes all followed and it’s fair to say he had a few miles under his belt and his encyclopedic knowledge of music backed this up.
Martin really embodied the station ethos of taking our listeners on a musical journey whether it be his Teasing Trips, the Decades show, his musical charades (and it’s bizarre scoring system) to his last new show format, That Was The Week That Was (So It Was) – which is being continued in his memory by our own DJ Graz.
Martin’s passing leaves a huge hole in our NDR DJ Team, and the wider NDR family. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.
Rest easy buddy ❤
